Fire at Chilean Nursing Home Claims 16 Lives

An intense blaze broke out Friday evening at the El Edén nursing home in Pitrufquén, a town 640km south of Santiago. The fire ultimately killed 16 elderly residents and forced the evacuation of ten others who were brought to safety before the flames were fully contained.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the incident. Jorge Granada, the prosecutor leading the case, has said the cause remains unclear at this stage. President José Antonio Kast announced a national review of nursing‑home conditions across the country, pledging full cooperation with the justice system to identify failures in oversight or prevention and to implement measures that will prevent future tragedies.

The blaze started around 22:30 local time and was finally brought under control by Saturday morning. Firefighters continued clearing debris, dismantling collapsed corrugated metal roofing, while police cordoned off the site to safeguard nearby residents and former patients. Local leaders expressed deep sorrow; mayor Jacqueline Romero said the municipality is offering support to affected families.

The tragedy has cast a spotlight on the safety standards of care facilities in Chile, highlighting the urgent need for stronger emergency preparedness and regular inspections to protect vulnerable populations.
