CHICAGO (FlashPoint) — A father and his one-year-old daughter were pepper-sprayed at close range while heading grocery shopping in Cicero, Chicago, over the weekend during a federal immigration enforcement operation, raising serious questions about law enforcement conduct in the area.
Rafael Veraza recounted the distressing encounter that occurred in the parking lot of a Sam's Club. The incident unfolded amid escalating tensions in the area, which has seen heightened immigration enforcement activity, resulting in over 3,200 arrests in recent months. Veraza claimed that when they noticed a helicopter, a common sign of the presence of federal immigration agents, they attempted to exit the area. Unfortunately, an agent approached their vehicle and fired a pepper-spray weapon through an open window, targeting both him and his daughter.
My daughter was trying to open her eyes; she was struggling to breathe, Veraza said, visibly shaken as he spoke to reporters while holding his distraught child. A video captured by the family showed the chaos and confusion during the incident, with the Rev. Matt DeMateo, a local pastor, offering help and documenting the scene as well.
Despite the family's claims, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a statement denying their account, asserting that there were no controls or pepper spray used in that location.
This incident unfolded during a particularly chaotic environment in Cicero, a suburb adjacent to the heavily populated Little Village neighborhood, which has been a focal point for protests against aggressive immigration enforcement tactics. Many businesses in the area have displayed signs warning of ICE agents, while local residents often honk their car horns to alert others about the presence of immigration officials.
The continuing immigration crackdown has left many feeling vulnerable, with reports of federal agents employing severe measures, including the use of chemical agents in residential areas, daycare facilities, and against service workers in various public locations. These aggressive strategies have prompted significant backlash, with legal challenges being raised over the methods employed by border enforcement officials.
The troubling nature of this event, particularly affecting innocent citizens shopping for groceries, amplifies calls for a review of the current practices governing immigration enforcement and the welfare of affected communities.
