On 26 08 2026 a vehicle unexpectedly drove into a crowd standing opposite Caen’s main train station, leaving two people dead and ten others with injuries ranging from minor to critical.
The incident was described by the prefect of Calvados, David Clavière, as a ‘deliberate ramming’ possibly linked to a fight that broke out earlier between rival groups of young men.
Police detained the 26‑year‑old driver, originally from Russia, about 20‑km away in Ouistreham after a thorough search supported by the city’s CCTV footage. No prior criminal record related to terror was found.
With witnesses reporting a large crowd gathered around police cars and ambulances, authorities have cordoned off the area and opened a detailed investigation led by Caen’s Specialised Crime Division.
Victims are all male, aged between 17 and 40, several of whom are listed as critical on the emergency wards of the local hospital.
The car rammed into people opposite Caen station, reportedly after a fight had broken out.
