A funeral for Charlie Kirk, the 31‑year‑old founder of Turning Point USA, was pierced by a courtroom visit, as his family saw the suspect in a Utah courthouse.
The activist, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, was fatally shot on 10 September 2025 while speaking on the campus of Utah Valley University. Two days later police arrested 23‑year‑old Tyler Robinson and charged him with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstructing justice and witness tampering.
Robinson has not yet entered a plea, and prosecutors have called for the death penalty. In the preliminary hearing that opened on Monday, the attorneys in the case laid out the evidence they intend to present, while the defense asked the judge to keep cameras out of the courtroom and to remove the death penalty from consideration.
The Kirk family released a statement before the proceedings, saying, “Charlie was a beloved husband, son, brother, friend, and father.” The statement thanked the community for their support and requested privacy as they grieve.
The court will hold its sessions through Friday. A total of four law‑enforcement witnesses are expected to testify, and both sides will question the chain of evidence leading to Robinson’s arrest. The case has drawn national attention, reflecting broader tensions surrounding partisan political activism and campus safety in the United States.
