In the remote village of Konotopie, a 55.6‑metre concrete sculpture of the Virgin Mary has been officially unveiled, reportedly making it the tallest such statue on the continent. The towering figure is roughly 18 metres taller than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer, although it still falls short of a 98‑metre Mary statue in the Philippines.
The consecration took place on Saturday, aligning the ceremony with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Local Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski, who officiated the event, remarked that contemporary society often “looks only to the earth” while the statue’s open arms invite believers to “raise our gaze upwards to God and heaven.”
The statue’s remote location—several miles from any major Polish city—is largely a result of a commission by a millionaire couple native to the area. Two helicopters flew overhead, releasing rose petals, and the unveiling drew a diverse crowd that included former communist‑era dissident Lech Wałęsa, who praised his enduring faith in the Virgin Mary during his brief address to the gathering.
While Poland remains the most Catholic nation in Europe, many young people in urban centers have increasingly turned away from institutional religious practices. The towering Mary statue, therefore, serves both as a tribute to traditional faith and as a symbolic reminder of spirituality’s place in a modern society.
