Starlink faces a standoff over Indian entry

SpaceX owner Elon Musk has publicly accused Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of India’s largest conglomerate, of intentionally blocking the launch of the satellite‑based internet service Starlink. Musk’s criticism came after a tweet claiming that certain oligarchs held a monopolistic chokehold on Indian consumers and that this “crimes against the people of India.” The post specifically mentioned the Ambani family, sparking headlines across tech news outlets.

India’s Ministry of Communications has denied the allegations, stating that Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications are all at the same stage of the approval process. All three operators are still awaiting a security clearance and spectrum allocation before commercial services can begin.

The dispute comes as the Indian satellite‑internet market enters a pivotal phase. Reliance Jio Infocomm and Bharti Airtel, both of which have signed agreements with SpaceX to distribute Starlink equipment, are preparing launch plans of their own. Akash Ambani, the chairman of Jio and Mukesh Ambani’s son, stated that the company is pursuing its own satellite‑communications technology and that it is not affected by Musk’s claims.

Starlink has sought entry into India since 2021 and holds key licences, but a final security clearance is still pending. The Indian government cites security concerns over the satellite network, as it recovered Starlink equipment during a drug‑smuggling probe in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and an army operation in Manipur in 2024. Musk has argued that no Starlink service has ever operated in India, thereby questioning the legality of the recovered hardware.

While the company’s pricing strategy for India has not yet been announced, analysts suggest that a Canadian‑style package, with a starting fee similar to the $55‑per‑month US residential plan, could prove unaffordable for many rural households. In a brighter view, Musk claims Starlink will bring high‑speed, affordable connectivity to states where cable and mobile networks are difficult to deploy.
