In brief

Efforts are ongoing to locate missing individuals as rescuers assist those affected by the maritime disaster.

In a tragic incident on Sunday morning, a fire broke out on the KM Barcelona 5, a passenger ship traveling through Indonesian waters, leading to the death of at least three individuals. The vessel was ferrying more than 200 people from the Talaud Islands to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province. Authorities, including Vice Adm. Denih Hendrata of the Indonesian Fleet Command, confirmed the incident occurred near Talise. Eyewitness videos shared by the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency depicted a chaotic scene, with passengers wearing life jackets in the water as they awaited rescue.Approximately 280 people were onboard at the time of the fire, but reports regarding the number of those rescued, injured, or unaccounted for remain unclear. The search and rescue operation, coordinated by BASARNAS, involved at least two rescue ships and smaller inflatable boats. While responders work to ascertain the situation's details, the cause of the fire and the identity of the ship's operating company are still under investigation.Ferry-related incidents are unfortunately common in Indonesia, an archipelago comprising over 17,000 islands where sea travel is prevalent. Just weeks earlier, a separate tragedy occurred when the KMT Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry sank, resulting in five fatalities and 29 individuals reported missing as it headed to Bali. Johnny Diaz reports on breaking news, illustrating the persistent risks associated with maritime travel in the region.
