In brief
In an exciting turn of events at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show held at Madison Square Garden, Monty, a Giant Schnauzer, made history by clinching the Best in Show title. This triumph marks a significant achievement for the breed, as Monty became the first Giant Schnauzer to win the coveted title in the show’s 149-year history.
After finishing among the final contenders for three consecutive years, Monty's persistence paid off. The five-year-old canine, with his striking all-black coat, stood out from a competitive field of more than 2,500 dogs representing over 200 breeds. His owner, Katie Bernardin, celebrated this moment, saying, "The puppy did the damn thing." Judge Paula Nykiel, a seasoned dog breeder and handler, assessed Monty's performance favorably during the three-day event leading up to the finals. Key criteria included adherence to breed standards and examination of physical attributes. Alongside Monty, notable finalists included Bourbon, a whippet and runner-up, Comet the shih tzu, Mercedes the German shepherd, and Neal the bichon frise. This year's win for Monty not only adds to the Giant Schnauzer's legacy but also brings the Working Group its first overall victory since 2004. The Westminster Kennel Club, the oldest dog show club in the U.S., is famed for its rigorous competition and tradition, solidifying Monty’s place in its illustrious history.
