Claude Mythos 5 Released to Public, Sparking Security Concerns

Anthropic, the American AI startup, unlocked its most powerful model—Claude Mythos 5—for general use this week. The move follows an earlier announcement that the tool was too powerful to be released widely, citing potential risks such as exploitation of computer systems or inadvertent disclosure of sensitive information.

Claude Fable 5 is essentially a hardened version of the earlier Claude Mythos model. During its private preview in April, the model drew wide attention from technology, finance and government leaders who were alarmed by its capacity to "hack" or otherwise compromise computer systems. Despite the worries, the company maintained that it had built safeguards into the public release.

The public version will come with usage limits and monitoring, but the company admitted that "releasing a model this capable comes with risks." It also highlighted that its own private testing had already uncovered more than 10,000 critical security flaws in partner systems.

US government agencies, despite an ongoing lawsuit against Anthropic, have continued to experiment with the model. Canadian Finance Minister François‑Philippe Champagne noted in April that the attention on Mythos was warranted because it is “the unknown, unknown.”

Anthropic’s valuation has approached $1 trillion, and the company is reportedly preparing for an IPO. The new public launch, which will now be available to a broader group of “trusted” users—including cyber‑defenders and infrastructure providers—signals a willingness to balance commercial ambition with the complex ethics that large‑scale AI entails.

The core of the debate, according to Anthropic co‑founder Jack Clark, is that “the AI industry has a gas pedal but no brake pedal.” He argues that the public should be empowered to slow the pace of AI development as effectively as it can accelerate.

In the weeks ahead, watchers will be looking closely at how the new release is regulated, how it performs in real‑world applications, and whether it can live up to the safety promises that Anthropic has issued. The story underscores that the rapid evolution of AI technology—particularly those powering sophisticated models like Claude Mythos 5—is tightly entwined with questions about security, ethics, and public oversight.
