PARCHMAN, Miss. (FlashPoint) - Charles Crawford was pronounced dead at 6:15 PM on Wednesday after being executed by lethal injection in Mississippi State Penitentiary. Crawford, 59, spent over 30 years on death row after being convicted in 1994 for the heinous kidnapping, rape, and murder of 20-year-old Kristy Ray.
Earlier in the day, he made his final remarks, telling his family he loves them and finds peace in God. He addressed Ray's family too, mentioning that true closure comes from God. The execution began at 6:01 PM when he was observed taking deep breaths before being declared unconscious.
Crawford's conviction stemmed from a 1993 incident where he abducted Ray from her family home, leaving behind a ransom note. He was apprehended the next day after law enforcement found another ransom note linked to another victim in Crawford's father-in-law's residence.
His past also included a 1991 assault for which he was a suspect, complicating his legal history as his previous convictions were considered during his capital murder trial.
Despite numerous legal appeals to maintain his innocence throughout the years, Crawford was ultimately denied a new trial by the U.S. Supreme Court. The ruling pointed to alleged ineffective assistance from his lawyers during the original trial, particularly regarding their decision to pursue an insanity defense against Crawford's wishes.
This execution is part of a recent surge in death row executions across the United States, with 38 men executed federally this year. The growing number of state-sanctioned deaths raises concerns about the legal processes involved.
