In brief

Emergency call logs published by the Nashville Banner show a chaotic night in Riverbend Prison when officials failed to kill convicted murderer Christa Pike with lethal injection. Records indicate a false initial call, a delayed confirmation that the execution was genuine, and confusion over whether the drug had reached Pike’s bloodstream. Pike, who was hospitalized and later discharged, now faces a potentially new execution attempt while the state mulls a commutation. The incident has sparked an investigation and the resignation of the top corrections officer.

Emergency call recordings released by the Nashville Banner have exposed a frantic night at Riverbend Prison. Officials and first‑responders were caught in a web of confusion after the state failed to kill convicted murderer Christa Pike on 30 September 2023.

Pike, 50, was given two injections of the death‑row drug pentobarbital, but the chemical apparently did not reach her bloodstream in sufficient quantity. The injection failed to kill her, leading to a dramatic transfer to a hospital where she later recovered enough to walk and speak again.

The recordings show an initial call to emergency services around 20:40 local time that was dismissed as false when the caller could not provide an authentication code. The dispatcher wasn’t until 21:11 that the call was confirmed as genuine, at which point ambulances were finally allowed into the prison.

The confusion was compounded by staff from the prison’s central command who insisted they never placed the tele‑call, creating a dead‑lock that delayed medical intervention. In a later recording, a medic on the scene noted, “just ‘cause there’s been so much other confusion.”

The Tennessee Department of Corrections has yet to release an official statement, but investigations are underway. The head of the department resigned amid the controversy, and Governor Bill Lee has paused all executions for the rest of the year while the state decides whether Pike will ever face another death sentence.

Pike’s lawyers argue that the drug spread under the skin rather than into her bloodstream, and they have urged the state to commutate her sentence to life without parole. Slemmer’s mother, who supported Pike’s execution, has decried the night as a “mess.” Pike’s former partner, Tadaryl Shipp, remains in prison but was spared the death penalty because the crime was committed before he reached adulthood.

The incident raises profound questions about the safety and reliability of lethal injection protocols and the accountability of the corrections system. As the investigation continues, the nation watches closely to see whether Tennessee will revisit its execution strategy or opt for a permanent halt.
