Bear kills man in home attack near Mongolian capital

A bear has killed a man and seriously injured a woman after it attacked them in their home near the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar.

Police say the incident happened in the Bayanzurkh district overnight on Wednesday in a traditional Mongolian nomadic tent‑like structure known as a ger.

The man, in his 40s, died, but the woman, in her 50s, managed to escape and alert neighbours. She is now in serious condition at a hospital, officials said.

Bears are increasingly sighted near humans in Mongolia, driven by climate change and shrinking food supplies.

Rangers are hunting for the bear, while authorities urge locals to stay vigilant and report any sightings.

This year alone there have been 24 bear sightings near the capital, up from just two in 2018, according to the city official.

Videos of bears entering gers, damaging property and attacking livestock have gone viral on Mongolian social media.

Officials have issued bear‑hunting permits across eight provinces and are seeking tranquiliser guns to aid rangers in rural areas.

While many Mongolians remain nomadic, more people live in settled communities and urban centres, increasing human–bear encounters.
