Bangkok declares disaster as heavy rains spark flooding

Days of almost continuous heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in the Thai capital, with the city's governor declaring it a disaster‑affected zone.

Almost 300 mm (11.8 inches) of rain has fallen over the period, and more is expected in the coming days, according to Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.

Videos from Bangkok show cars trying to navigate roads that have been entirely submerged by the floodwaters, with some vehicles appearing stranded. The authorities are working to clear roads and provide relief, while residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid low‑lying areas.

The flooding has already caused significant economic and social disruption across the city.
