Australia outcry over Israel’s refusal to investigate aid worker death
Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, said she was outraged by Israel’s decision not to open a criminal investigation into the death of World Central Kitchen aid worker Zomi Frankcom, who was killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza in April 2024.
Frankcom, an Australian aid worker, was killed along with six colleagues in a strike by Israeli forces that targeted a humanitarian convoy. The incident has raised serious questions about compliance with international humanitarian law.
In a statement, Wong called the decision “far short of the accountability we expect” and summoned the Israeli ambassador to express Australia’s discontent. The ambassador defended the IDF, asserting that there was no criminal intention behind the strikes and therefore no criminal responsibility.
Frankcom’s family released a statement expressing deep disappointment and insisting that an independent investigation is still necessary. They rejected the IDF’s findings and highlighted the importance of justice for the victims.
In addition to the Australian victims, the attack also killed three British nationals, a Palestinian, a Polish national and a dual US‑Canadian citizen. The UK has yet to comment on the Israeli decision.
Wong noted several unanswered questions, including why a second strike followed the initial attack and why drone audio remained unshared with Australia. The IDF’s internal report blamed procedural failures and mistakes in identification but denied criminal intent.
While the IDF declined to investigate the killing of Frankcom, it proposed investigations into other incidents, such as the death of five‑year‑old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab and the shooting of ambulance staff in a related operation.
Wong reiterated Australia’s commitment to press Israel for justice and called for an independent inquiry that would provide legitimate accountability, a stance that exemplifies one of the strongest criticisms of the Israeli military since the Gaza war began.
