A blaze ripped through a restaurant‑apartments building in the Swiss Alpine town of Thusis, leaving the structure completely destroyed. The fire, which started just after midnight, left five people missing, and eight others injured. Two of those injured were serious, two moderate and four minor.
Nearly one hundred firefighters rushed to the scene. The stairwell collapsed, forcing crews to open the roof with a crane to tackle the fire. The blaze broke out on the second floor; investigators are still probing the cause.
Fourteen residents escaped. Hospitalised patients were taken to neighbouring Chur, Thusis, Ilanz and Zurich. Police and the prosecutor’s office are investigating the fire’s origins.
The Alpine region, part of the Graubünden canton, is a popular spot for winter sports and summer nature activities. The tragic event has disrupted the usual tranquil rhythm of this eastern Swiss destination.
