What Happened?

Word spread that a female student was assaulted on or near a hostel a few days earlier. Students and the media described the suspect as a plumber, painter or construction worker. No victim or perpetrator was identified, and CCTV footage examined by police so far revealed no evidence of any attack.

The rumours triggered crowds that poured onto the highway and onto the campus grounds. Police vehicles were damaged, officers were injured, and parts of the campus were vandalised. Protesters carried torches and stones; police used batons to disperse crowds, a claim the officers denied. The campus was subsequently heavily policed and suspended for a 10‑day period.

Why Did the Protests Grow So Large?

An initial claim of sexual assault merged with concerns about campus safety and a perception that the university’s response was inadequate.
