In brief

During her ongoing murder trial, Erin Patterson explained her passion for mushrooms and her journey into wild foraging, stating that she believes wild fungi offer more flavor. Charged with the murder of three relatives after serving a toxic mushroom-laden meal, Patterson maintains her innocence, insisting it was an accident.

An Australian woman, Erin Patterson, who is on trial for allegedly murdering three relatives with a toxic mushroom meal, expressed her passion for mushrooms while testifying in court. Patterson, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, described how her fondness for mushrooms evolved during the Covid pandemic, leading her to explore wild mushroom varieties that she claims possess "more flavour."The tragic incident occurred in July 2023, when Patterson served her in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66, a beef wellington that contained death cap mushrooms. According to prosecutors, Patterson intentionally included the poisonous fungi, while her defense maintains it was an unfortunate mishap. On the second day of her testimony, Patterson detailed her history of foraging wild mushrooms, stating that she began the practice during lockdown and frequently foraged with her children in various locations, including botanic gardens and her property. She recounted her initial encounter with wild mushrooms, noting she carefully sampled a small portion before cooking it and did not experience any adverse effects. The court recorded that Patterson had acquired a food dehydrator in April 2023 to preserve mushrooms due to their short seasonal availability. When asked about the sourcing of mushrooms for the July meal, she indicated that most were purchased from a supermarket, while some were obtained from an Asian grocery. She pointed out that she had previously bought a range of mushrooms but could not recall the specifics of her recent purchases.Patterson also reflected on her relationships with her husband Simon and her in-laws, highlighting some tensions following her separation from Simon in 2015. Despite the separation, she maintained a positive relationship with her in-laws, who continued to support her. Nonetheless, she acknowledged rising tensions over financial matters starting in October 2022 and had sought mediation from her in-laws amid those disputes.
