In brief
In a heartfelt narrative, journalist John Jeremiah Sullivan shares his experience following Pope Francis during his 2016 interfaith tour in Azerbaijan and Georgia. Highlighting the pope's dignified demeanor amidst protests and cultural tensions, Sullivan recounts a moment when a gust of wind knocked off the pope's zucchetta, leading to an unexpected act of kindness from an Azeri trumpeter.
In a time defined by political and religious divides, moments of grace can emerge unexpectedly from profound situations. This was evident during my brief encounter with Pope Francis, the figure at the forefront of contemporary diplomacy. Back in 2016, I had the unique experience of traveling with him on an official Vatican outreach mission to Azerbaijan and Georgia, two countries with predominantly non-Catholic populations.Upon arrival in Tbilisi, Georgia's capital, we were met with protests. Many held signs declaring "Pope Francis is the Antichrist," a sentiment stemming from his progressive views on issues like homosexuality, which had alienated some Orthodox followers. This challenging environment did not deter Pope Francis, who continued his mission despite the reception.A striking moment during his visit occurred when we proceeded to Baku, Azerbaijan, where the pope was to celebrate Mass at the sole Catholic cathedral. As he walked along a gravel path flanked by a military band and reporters, an unexpected gust of wind blew his regal white hat, known as a zucchetta, from his head. The scene transformed into a silent spectacle of tension. While the pope seemed unaware, the eyes of an Azeri trumpeter filled with distress. There was a palpable fear that this slip would be blown out of proportion in a country governed by an authoritarian regime. In an act of bravery and respect, the trumpeter stepped out of formation, retrieved the zucchetta, and placed it back on the pope’s head with utmost care, reminiscent of a parent helping a child. The moment was astounding — the pope's serenity remained unshaken, continuing to walk forward, his attention focused elsewhere. The trumpeter resumed his position, and the band continued their performance, restoring an air of normalcy. This small yet significant episode was emblematic of the tensions in these regions, as well as the quiet resilience of human kindness. It was a privilege to witness Pope Francis navigate complex social landscapes with dignity and grace, reaffirming the role of empathy in transcending differences.
