In brief
Emergency services are racing against time amid rising temperatures and shifting winds in the firefighting battle surrounding Jerusalem.
Firefighters have continued to battle rampant wildfires on Jerusalem's outskirts for a second consecutive day, facing some of the most severe fires the region has experienced in years. As efforts persisted to extinguish the flames, officials reopened the main highway connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, allowing evacuees to return home following evacuation orders that disrupted Independence Day celebrations. Firefighters have made incremental progress but remain on alert as a shift in wind patterns is expected to exacerbate the fires. Tal Volvovitch, a spokeswoman for Israel’s fire and rescue service, emphasized the urgency of their mission, stating, "We’re doing everything we can to finish in the coming hours because the wind gusts can bring us back to where we started."While the exact cause of the wildfires is still under investigation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that 18 individuals had been detained on arson suspicions, one of whom was caught igniting fires. Netanyahu cited a "deadly combination" of strong winds, dry conditions, and overgrown shrubbery that has led to the rapid spread of the flames. On Thursday, police took into custody a 19-year-old from a Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem for allegedly supporting the wildfires on social media. To bolster firefighting efforts, planes from Croatia, Italy, and Cyprus are scheduled to arrive later in the day to assist Israeli firefighters. The Palestinian Authority has also offered support, though officials hinted that collaboration might not occur as they have in past incidents. Amid the crisis, Israel's fire and rescue service has enforced a ban on lighting fires in open spaces until May 7, though barbecues in designated locations remain permitted. The ban comes just ahead of a traditional time when many Israelis gather in parks and beaches to celebrate Independence Day with festive outdoor cooking. As the blazes continue, collaboration between Israeli and Palestinian emergency services remains uncertain, revealing the complexities of interagency relations amid ongoing tension.
