In brief

Boualem Sansal, the Algerian French writer, has been sentenced to five years in prison, an act that has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for intervention from France.

In a controversial ruling, Boualem Sansal, an Algerian French writer, was handed a five-year prison term by an Algerian court on Thursday, following accusations of undermining national unity and security. His arrest last November was triggered by remarks in which he expressed support for Morocco regarding a territorial dispute. This event has heightened tensions between Algeria and France, especially as Sansal, who gained French citizenship last year, has become a symbolic figure in the ongoing discourse surrounding freedom of expression. The writer's sentencing has faced sharp criticism from the global literary community and elicited pleas for his release from political leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron. Sansal's legal representation, Francois Zimeray, stated that the writer was denied access to legal counsel during the trial, which he labeled a “cruel detention” with an unjust process. "The sentence betrays the very meaning of the word justice," Zimeray said, further emphasizing the hastiness of the trial, which lasted a mere 20 minutes. At approximately 80 years old and diagnosed with cancer, Sansal is currently incarcerated at Kolea prison, located near Algeria’s capital, Algiers. The global outcry continues to grow as advocates for Sansal call for his immediate release and question the legitimacy of the Algerian judicial system.
