The Israeli military has reported conducting its most powerful air strike in Yemen, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals, according to Houthi sources. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) targeted Houthi security and intelligence sites in Sanaa in retaliation for ongoing drone and missile attacks directed at Israel. This military action follows an incident where a Houthi drone attack injured 22 people at a Red Sea resort in Eilat.

Houthi officials condemned the strikes, branding them a 'brutal crime', and stated that civilian buildings were among those hit during the aerial bombardment. The Houthis have maintained control over large parts of north-western Yemen since ousting the government over a decade ago, a situation that has sparked a prolonged civil conflict.

The strikes also came just before a scheduled speech by Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi, indicating a calculated strike amid heightened tensions following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized that the strikes targeted various military facilities associated with the Houthi organization as part of their strategic response to what they describe as ongoing threats and attacks. The IDF stated that it would continue conducting operations against Houthi forces as necessary, citing a recent uptick in hostilities directed at Israel.

Videos from the aftermath depict significant damage, with plumes of smoke reported rising over the cityscape of Sanaa, while officials indicated that search efforts were ongoing to assess full casualty figures amid the rubble of demolished buildings.
