In brief

A tourist submarine tragedy leaves six dead, including two children, as rescue efforts continue amid several injuries.

The Red Sea witnessed a tragic incident early Thursday morning when a tourist submarine, known as Sindbad, sank off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt. Six individuals, all Russian tourists, lost their lives in the disaster, which involved a total of 45 passengers onboard when the submarine went down. Among the rescued, 39 individuals were saved, with reports indicating that nine suffered injuries, four of whom were in critical condition. Governor Amr Hanafy of the Red Sea area confirmed that no additional passengers were reported missing. The victims hailed from multiple countries, specifically Russia, India, Norway, and Sweden, but all six fatalities were confirmed as Russian nationals, including two children. The Sindbad submarine has been operating as a tourist attraction for many years, offering trips to explore the vibrant coral reefs along the Hurghada coastline. This company operates a small fleet, boasting only 14 recreational submarines globally. Reports suggest the submarine depths reach approximately 25 meters (82 feet) during excursions. Previous passengers, like Dr. James Aldridge, shared positive experiences aboard the Sindbad submarine, illustrating an overall sense of safety during their dives. However, others, including Benjamin Grey, disclosed troubling incidents during his trip, such as surfacing multiple times and a potential safety oversight. The exploration accident occurred about one kilometer off the coast of Hurghada around 10:00 AM local time. The area is a hotspot for tourists due to its picturesque beaches and marine life. This tragic event follows a series of similar incidents in the region, further raising concerns about maritime safety.Egyptian authorities are currently investigating the sinking's cause, with initial findings asserting that the submarine held valid licenses, and crew members were properly certified. Despite calm weather conditions at the time of the incident, the specific circumstances that led to the submarine's failure remain unclear, prompting ongoing scrutiny and response from emergency services and the local community.
