In brief

Despite record snowpack, resorts must navigate the complexities snow brings to operations.

As Japan experiences an incredibly successful ski season, it is also contending with the challenges posed by heavy snowfall. Some regions have reported over 12 feet of snow this month, creating a winter wonderland for skiers but also significant hurdles for ski resort workers. Austrian professional skier Tao Kreibich, 27, described the numerous opportunities for thrilling skiing in Japan's backcountry due to the massive snow accumulation. "You can do some crazy stuff," he noted in a recent video. However, this excessive snow has generated mixed feelings among resort operators.Shinichi Imoto, a spokesperson for Washigatake Ski Resort, highlighted the dual nature of heavy snowfall: "It’s both a joy and a worry." Resorts are grappling with large snowdrifts that complicate operations, leading to some closures of ski lifts. In addition, blocked access roads have prevented many ski enthusiasts from reaching the resorts. Unfortunately, the risks associated with navigating the backcountry have increased, causing more skiers to get lost or become trapped in avalanches. While the skiing conditions are ideal for many, the potential dangers cannot be overlooked, leading to a cautious approach this ski season.
