In a significant escalation of hostilities, Israel has launched multiple military attacks against Iran, reviving concerns of a broader conflict in the region. This surge in aggression comes on the heels of previous incidents, including the infamous drone strikes in September 2019, which targeted two major Saudi oil facilities and were attributed to Iran despite its denial of involvement.

As fears of war loom, many in the Middle East are wary of the potential economic repercussions. Firas Maksad, managing director for the Middle East and North Africa at the Eurasia Group, noted, “The tension is palpable and everybody is concerned about possible blowback.” Experts suggest that this could be the war the region has been anticipating and dreading for years.

Rapid condemnations from Gulf Arab states followed the Israeli actions, with the Saudi government leading the charge. A statement released by Riyadh declared, “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expresses its strong condemnation and denunciation of the blatant Israeli aggression against the brotherly Islamic Republic of Iran, which undermine its sovereignty and security and constitute a clear violation of international laws and norms.”

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and his counterparts from neighboring states quickly reached out to their Iranian peers to echo these sentiments of condemnation, signaling a united front among Arab nations in response to the Israeli incursions.

As the conflict intensifies, the long-sought détente and diplomatic engagement with Iran face significant challenges ahead, casting a shadow on the possibility of peace in a region already fraught with instability.
