In brief
For ten challenging years, Nairobi's only L.G.B.T.Q.-led church has relocated constantly due to threats and violence; however, it has successfully established a hidden space where nearly 100 members now gather for supportive worship.
In Nairobi, Kenya, an L.G.B.T.Q. church has persistently navigated a hostile environment for nearly a decade, being forced to switch locations ten times due to vandalism and police intervention. Once meeting at a center for sex workers, the congregation faced repeated disruptions, including arrests and attacks by local residents. Yet, despite these challenges, they have now discovered a secret sanctuary. On a recent Sunday, hidden from public eyes, almost 100 worshippers gathered to experience a moment of acceptance and support. Inside the room, they felt safe to express their identities and spirituality. The pastor’s heartfelt sermon addressed the struggles faced by many in the community, affirming their place in faith: “Family may kick you out... But today, I found a place for you in the Bible. Praise the Lord!” echoed through the congregation, met with affirmations of "Amen" from those present. Many attendees had fled from neighboring countries, where being L.G.B.T.Q. poses serious risks. This weekly gathering serves not only as a religious service but also as a powerful affirmation of their identity, allowing them to find solace and connection amidst adversity.
