In brief
Ukrainian women, separated from their partners due to war, grapple with emotional pain on Valentine's Day as they navigate the silence that follows their last messages.
On Valentine’s Day, as couples elsewhere celebrate love, Ukrainian war widows confront the painful void left by their partners who are away fighting. These relationships often hinge on digital communication, with cellphone messages transforming into cherished yet haunting reminders of absence. Take Olha Chesnokova, a Kyiv psychotherapist, who fondly recalls the last words she exchanged with her husband Yevhen Volosyan, before he left for the front lines two years ago. The couple had connected on Tinder, bonding over their shared love of music. Their love flourished quickly, culminating in a wedding shortly after Yevhen's military service began. Despite the distance and dangers of war, the couple maintained connections through daily texts and evening video calls, particularly during the nighttime hours when Yevhen piloted drones from afar. Their last interaction on November 24, 2023, portrayed the reality of military life, as Yevhen disclosed the challenges he faced operating drones, culminating in one crashing in a field. However, the regular updates began to dwindle. After their last reassured exchange, Olha eagerly awaited their planned call from a concert of their favorite artist, Serhii Zhadan. When Yevhen failed to respond, her anxiety grew. "Where are you?" she texted, seeking comfort drastically but receiving silence in return.Olha's experience is echoed across the nation, where many wives and partners are left longing for contact. These individuals often express their fears and insecurities through heartfelt messages, praying for replies that may never come. As the Valentine’s Day proceeds, they remember the warmth of their partners’ words and the overwhelming weight of their absence, cementing a deeper understanding of both love and loss in wartime Ukraine. War has underscored the fragility of relationships, and for those who wait, every unreturned message becomes a reminder of a love suspended amid uncertainty.
