In brief

In a dramatic show of military capability, Ukraine executed one of its largest drone bombardments at dawn on Tuesday, targeting numerous locations across Russia, particularly the Moscow region. This military action came as both sides ramped up hostilities just days before negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for over three years. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 337 drones, with 91 directed towards the capital itself. Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, condemned the operation as the most severe assault on the city since the beginning of the war, noting at least two fatalities and 14 injuries.

The drone attacks resulted in damage to at least one residential building, particularly its rooftops, triggering a temporary suspension of all four international airports serving the area’s substantial population of 21 million. In light of the escalating violence, Ukraine has proposed an immediate cease-fire concerning air strikes, offering to halt its long-range operations in exchange for a reciprocal agreement from Moscow. This proposal, which has garnered support from various European nations—including France—is seen as a potential initial step towards rebuilding trust and fostering further discussions about broader peace negotiations, amidst devastating human cost of over a million casualties combined among Ukrainian and Russian military personnel.
