In brief
Nicole Rizzo and her husband exemplify the trend of younger executives moving away from traditional 9-to-5 jobs to start their own businesses, venturing into less glamorous but potentially profitable industries, as seen through their acquisition of an aluminum machinery firm.
In recent years, younger professionals have increasingly opted out of corporate life, seeking both profits and a break from traditional work hours by diving into small business ownership. Nicole Rizzo and her husband David are a perfect illustration of this trend, having taken the leap to acquire Die Cleaning Equipment, a Phoenix-based company specializing in machinery that cleans aluminum extruders.Initially drawn to the business because it was run by a married couple, Nicole was surprised to discover that the company employed welders rather than janitors. Die Cleaning Equipment produces machines used in various industries, from automotive to medical equipment. The previous owners, Steve and Kristin Smith, had built a successful niche business but were ready to retire and travel in their Airstream trailer, prompting the sale.Although the Rizzos didn’t have much experience with aluminum—Nicole came from local government and David had a corporate farming background—a visit to the shop changed their perspective. Nicole described seeing the machinery as “the coolest thing” she’d ever encountered. In June 2021, they bought the company for approximately $600,000, with Nicole stepping into the CEO role.Fast forward almost four years, and the Rizzos have not only recovered their initial investment but are thriving in their new venture. Their success showcases how younger generations are redefining entrepreneurial pursuits in often overlooked but vital sectors of the economy.
