In brief

UN aid trucks in Sudan were attacked, with multiple casualties reported. The incident underscores the escalating violence in the country as the civil war continues, leading to dire humanitarian conditions.

A devastating attack on a United Nations aid convoy occurred in North Darfur, Sudan, resulting in multiple casualties. According to the UN's spokesperson, the convoy, which included trucks from the World Food Programme, was ambushed while preparing to leave for el-Fasher, a city beset by famine conditions. The Sudanese government has attributed the assault to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group embroiled in conflict with the army.Contrarily, the RSF has accused the army of orchestrating the assault in the town of el-Koma on Monday night. Four members of the UN convoy lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries. RSF spokesperson Basha Tabiq confirmed the fatalities via a social media post. Local volunteer responders, known as the el-Koma Emergency Room, reported the incident alongside a video showcasing a torched truck laden with aid supplies, claiming that “Sudanese army drones” were responsible for the attack. The RSF currently controls el-Koma, an area that has previously experienced frequent violence between the paramilitary group and army forces. The local emergency organization noted that at least 89 individuals were killed or injured due to airstrikes conducted by Sudanese army warplanes on a busy market in the town shortly before the convoy attack. The Sudanese army has yet to respond to these allegations. The ongoing civil war, which erupted over two years ago following a violent power struggle between the army and RSF, has precipitated one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, prompting over four million people to flee their homes. The conflict initially began as a joint coup aimed at hindering Sudan's democratic transition but has since devolved into an intractable struggle for power.
