In brief

In a remarkable feat of innovation, drones are becoming essential tools in rescue operations during severe flooding in southwestern China.

Article text:As heavy rains wreaked havoc in southwestern China, rescuers have turned to drones for critical assistance. In an event that garnered viral attention, a drone operator spotted a man stranded on a rooftop amidst rising waters and swiftly used his drone to airlift him to safety. The footage, shared widely on social media, shows the struggling resident dangled from the drone’s cord while being safely transported to dry ground. The heroic rescue unfolded in Guangxi Province, where flooding has caused mass evacuations and heightened emergency alerts in recent days. The operator, Lai Zhongxin, typically utilizes his drones for agricultural purposes, such as fertilizing crops and transporting building materials. The creative use of drones for lifesaving rescue operations, however, was an unexpected yet fortunate application of their capabilities.Drones across southeastern and southwestern China are increasingly delivering aid to areas afflicted by severe weather. Carrying sizeable canvas bags of relief supplies, these aerial vehicles navigate through immense floodwaters and blockaded roads while also dispensing disinfectant to help curb flood-related health risks.Louis Liu, founder of DAP Technologies, highlighted the unprecedented application of drones in life-threatening situations, comparing the aerial evacuation to utilizing an excavator for rescue operations in emergencies. “Laws may stretch in favor of saving lives,” Liu commented, acknowledging the need for dedicated rescue drones in the future. "The industry is already investigating advancements in this direction."Last week, as part of ongoing training drills, firefighters in Shenzhen successfully employed drones to conduct water-spraying exercises from the air. In urban settings, drones have also been instrumental in everyday tasks like delivering food and packages. The Chinese government's focus on developing a “low-altitude economy” has shifted the landscape of drone usage, elevating its importance in managing emergencies like natural disasters. Just a few months ago, commercial passenger drone services received regulatory approvals from China’s Civil Aviation Administration, paving the way for broader applications of this technology. With more advancements on the horizon, drones are likely to play an even greater role in both urban logistics and emergency response in the future.
