Leaders from France, Germany, and Poland have travelled to Moldova to show support for the country's accession to the EU and warn of Russia's relentless efforts to undermine that ambition. The visit comes as Moldova marks 34 years of independence from Moscow, declared as the Soviet Union fell apart. However, it is also taking place a month before critical parliamentary elections where pro-Russian elements may gain influence. Flanked by European heads of state, Moldova's President Maia Sandu declared that EU membership is not a distant dream, but a project we are working on, vital for security.

Sandu emphasized that the ongoing war Russia wages against Ukraine illustrates that Europe represents freedom and peace, contrasting with Russia which she characterized as a source of war and death. She reaffirmed Moldova's commitment to EU membership, ensuring that the path is irreversible despite potential electoral setbacks for her pro-EU party. EU leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, echoed their support, sharing their experiences of overcoming challenges in the journey towards EU integration. As Moldova faces external threats and internal political dynamics, this display of solidarity highlights the ongoing significance of European alliances in securing peace and stability in the region.
