In brief
In a dramatic policy turnaround, many House Republicans are shifting to support aid for Ukraine amidst the ongoing war, influenced by President Trump’s new stance advocating for military assistance, despite their previous opposition.
Less than two years prior, House Republicans exhibited vehement opposition to further U.S. aid for Ukraine, even deposing Speaker Kevin McCarthy over allegations of a "secret side deal" aimed at continuing such assistance. More recently, Speaker Mike Johnson took a significant risk to advance a Ukraine funding package, despite the majority of his Republican colleagues voting against it. However, as the war persists, numerous Republicans are revising their positions in alignment with President Trump's latest pro-Ukraine directives. This shift demonstrates Trump's enduring influence over the Republican Party, as his prior disdain for U.S. support for Ukraine has now transformed into advocacy for expedited military aid to the nation grappling with Russian aggression. Former detractors of Ukraine assistance are notably quiet, while some staunch Trump allies, who previously labeled such policies as reckless, are now framing them as strategic diplomacy. Representative Derrick Van Orden from Wisconsin, who previously criticized the Biden government for its lack of a clear aid strategy last spring, has openly endorsed Trump’s new approach, marking a return to support for Ukraine that contrasts sharply with past stances.
