A United Nations commission of inquiry has declared that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. This conclusion is based on evidence suggesting that four of the five genocidal acts defined under international law have been carried out since the start of the latest conflict with Hamas in 2023.
The report cites acts including the killing of group members, causing serious bodily and mental harm, deliberately inflicting harsh conditions to destroy the group, and measures to prevent births, all fundamentally impacting the Palestinian population amidst the ongoing war.
The commission gathered statements from Israeli leaders and documented patterns of conduct by Israeli forces, all indicating a genocidal intent towards the Palestinian people. These findings have led to a significant outcry from various international organizations and human rights advocates.
In response, Israel's foreign ministry has strongly rejected the report, describing it as a distortion of the truth and claiming that the commission members are acting as proxies of Hamas, relying on unfounded allegations. The Israeli government insists that their military operations are solely focused on dismantling Hamas and not on the Palestinian populace.
Since the onset of military actions following Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023, the health ministry in Gaza reports over 64,905 Palestinian deaths, widespread displacement, and a catastrophic humanitarian crisis with infrastructure crippled and basic services obliterated.
The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, formed by the UN Human Rights Council to investigate violations of international law, emphasizes that its findings are based on meticulous analysis over the past two years. The experts, including the chair Navi Pillay, assert that the Israeli state bears legal responsibility for these acts under the Genocide Convention.
The commission's report stresses that all nations have an obligation to prevent and punish genocide, warning that failure to act could lead to complicity in these crimes.
