In brief

Iga Swiatek has been suspended for one month after testing positive for a banned substance, trimetazidine, which was traced to a contaminated medication.

World number two and accomplished five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek has accepted a one-month suspension following a positive doping test. The positive result came from an out-of-competition sample collected in August 2024 when she held the top position in the world. The banned substance detected was trimetazidine (TMZ), a heart medication. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that its investigation found Swiatek was not significantly at fault, as the positive result stemmed from a contaminated regulated medication. As a result, she was suspended provisionally starting from September 12 but managed to lift that suspension through a successful appeal, although she still missed three tournament appearances. Taking into account Swiatek's negligible level of fault, the ITIA proposed a one-month suspension which she accepted on Wednesday. Her appeal highlighted that the contaminated substance came from a medicine produced in Poland. With the provisional suspension lifted on October 4, her eligibility will be reinstated on December 4, 2024. In addition, Swiatek forfeited the prize money earned from her performance at the Cincinnati Open, shortly after the date of the test. She missed competitions in the Korea Open, China Open, and Wuhan Open due to her suspension during key entry deadlines. Karen Moorhouse, CEO of ITIA, noted that the case was unique, considering the regulated status of TMZ in Poland despite its differing status globally, and emphasized the low fault in Swiatek's situation. Further updates are expected as details unfold regarding the impact of this incident on her career and the broader tennis community.
