The mayor of Teuchitlán in western Jalisco state, José Murguía Santiago, has been apprehended by prosecutors as part of an inquiry into a nearby site thought to be used for cartel training. Authorities suspect Murguía Santiago of colluding with the notorious New Generation Jalisco Cartel (CJNG), although he has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. This investigation was triggered in March when activists uncovered alarming remnants, including bone fragments and various discarded personal items like shoes and backpacks at the Izaguirre ranch, situated just outside the town.

Human rights organizations have expressed grave concerns regarding the ranch, describing it as potentially an "extermination camp" where individuals were forcibly recruited for cartel activities. This location has raised alarms throughout Mexico, a nation already plagued by violence and cartel-related crises. Recent reports have reported evidence that the ranch served as a training ground for the CJNG, one of the most potent drug trafficking organizations operating across borders, based predominantly in Jalisco.

Mexico's Attorney-General Alejandro Gertz provided an update last week to the press about the ongoing investigation surrounding the ranch. He indicated that while the site had been utilized for cartel recruit training, there was no definitive proof it served as a place for mass killings or cremation of victims. Gertz asserted that the bone fragments discovered were not recent, and forensic analyses indicated that any fires lit on the premises lacked the necessary heat to incinerate human remains. This information, however, has provoked anger among families searching for their missing loved ones, pushing for more comprehensive investigations into the significant number of disappearances connected to the site.

Activists, who have been diligently seeking out their missing relatives and those lost through cartel violence, have criticized Gertz’s press conference as insufficient, raising critical unanswered questions about the origins of the many abandoned belongings found at the ranch and the fates of the individuals behind them. Murguía Santiago had previously expressed his willingness to cooperate with investigations, stating he had “nothing to hide,” but prosecutors now allege he failed to act on his knowledge of the shocking activities at the ranch as their investigation continues.
