FDA Issues Urgent Recall for Lay's Potato Chips Over Possible Milk Allergen

The FDA has escalated a recall of Lay's Potato Chips, affecting over 6,000 bags in two states due to undeclared milk allergen concerns.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has heightened the urgency of a recall involving 6,344 bags of Lay's Classic Potato Chips, warning that consumption may pose serious health risks, especially for those with milk allergies. Initially announced by Frito-Lay last month, the recall affects consumers in Washington and Oregon who purchased the 13-ounce bags starting November 3, 2024. The chips may contain undeclared milk, prompting the FDA to label it as a Class I recall, the most severe classification given by the agency, highlighting the potential for life-threatening reactions.

Class I recalls indicate a significant risk of serious health consequences or even death. Specifically, individuals with milk allergies—the most common food allergens outlined by the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004—are the primary risk group. Consumers are advised to check for bags marked with "guaranteed fresh" dates of February 11, 2025, and manufacturing codes 6462307xx or 6463307xx. No other Lay's varieties are impacted.

The FDA's decision to use its most severe recall classification remains somewhat obscured, particularly following recent federal health communication restrictions. As of now, there have been no reported cases of allergic reactions linked to the chips.
